Dark Moon in Sagittarius Ritual: Seek and Expand

  • 3 min read

Time: Ideally just before or right when the New Moon occurs (late evening of Dec 19 into Dec 20)

Supplies:

  • Tarot or oracle deck

  • Journal & pen

  • A map (can be a world map, a hand-drawn personal map, or even a symbolic "treasure map")

  • A bowl of water with a few drops of essential oil (peppermint, eucalyptus, or citrus for clarity)

  • A purple, deep blue, or white candle

  • Optional: lapis lazuli or amethyst (for wisdom & spiritual expansion)

  • Optional: incense or smudge (e.g.,. sage, juniper, or sandalwood)

  • A small piece of paper and something to write with

1. Prepare Your Sacred Space (5–7 min)

  • Dim or extinguish overhead lights; use candles only.

  • Light your candle and lay the map in front of you.

  • Place the bowl of scented water nearby.

  • If you smoke cleanse, or burn incense, do that now to cleanse the space and your aura.

  • Sit quietly and take three deep, slow breaths, feeling your spirit widen and reach outward.

2. Opening Movement & Invocation (3–5 min)

  • Stand and stretch your arms wide, as if you could touch the horizons.

  • Speak (softly or aloud): "I seek my highest truth. I expand beyond familiar borders. I trust the path that calls me forward."

  • Walk in a slow circle around your space (or turn in place), pausing at each direction:

    • East: "I welcome new perspectives"

    • South: "I welcome passionate purpose."

    • West: "I welcome emotional courage."

    • North: "I welcome grounded wisdom."

  • Return to your seat. Dip your fingers in the scented water and anoint your forehead (vision) and wrists (action).

3. Tarot Spread: "The Honest Explorer."

Shuffle intentionally, asking where you need to grow and what truth you've been avoiding, and draw 5 cards in an arrow or path formation:

Position

Meaning

1. The Limiting Belief

What narrow story or dogma I've accepted as truth that actually constrains me.

2. Where I've Played Small

The area of life where I've been hiding my wildness, curiosity, or full expression.

3. The Uncomfortable Truth

What I've been avoiding looking at because it would require change or challenge my worldview.

4. The Freedom Waiting

What becomes possible when I release the limitation and embrace the truth?

5. My Next Adventure

The bold step, journey, or expansion my soul is calling me toward.

Take your time with each card, notice where you feel resistance, excitement, or the pull of something larger.

4. Deep Journal Prompts (10–15 min)

Reflect in writing, ideally immediately after your tarot insights:

  1. What have I been telling myself is "realistic" or "responsible" that's actually just fear dressed up as wisdom?

  2. Where have I stopped asking questions, stopped exploring, or stopped believing in more, and what would change if I gave myself permission to seek again?

  3. What wild, expansive vision for my life have I been dismissing, and what's one courageous move I can make toward it?

Let the cards' fire ignite your writing. Don't shrink your dreams, let them roam freely on the page.

5. Map Your Journey & Commit (5–7 min)

  • On your small piece of paper, write one clear intention or goal inspired by your reading, something that expands you beyond your current boundaries.

  • Place this paper on the map, letting it rest somewhere that calls to you (a place you want to visit, a direction that feels right, or simply the center).

  • Place your hands over the paper and map, speaking your commitment aloud: "I claim this path. I step beyond the known. I trust myself to find the way."

  • Fold the paper and keep it with you (in your wallet, on your altar, under your pillow) as a talisman of your commitment.

6. Release & Seal (3 min)

  • Take the bowl of scented water outside (or to a window) and pour it onto the earth or into a plant, symbolically watering the seeds of your new journey.

  • Return and extinguish the candle as a seal of the ritual and as a symbolic "arrow released into the unknown."

Note: Sagittarius dark moon energy carries the archer's aim, the courage to seek truth and shoot for distant horizons. This ritual comes just before the winter solstice, making it especially potent for setting intentions before the year's darkest night and the return of the light. Trust your restless spirit. The path reveals itself to those who dare to walk it.
