Into the Depths: A Pisces Dark Moon Ritual for Dreams and Divination

On March 18, 2026, at 7:23 PM MST, the Moon goes completely dark in the mystical waters of Pisces.

This is the dark moon, the night before the new moon, when the sky is at its most black, when the veil between worlds is gossamer-thin, and when the unconscious speaks its loudest truths.

The dark moon is different from the new moon. While the new moon is about fresh beginnings and setting intentions, the dark moon is about the void itself, the fertile darkness, the space between breaths, the moment of absolute stillness before creation. It's when we descend into the underworld of our own psyche, when we listen to whispers we normally can't hear, when we retrieve treasures from the depths.

And this dark moon in Pisces? It's especially potent for diving deep.

The Magic of Pisces: Swimming in the Cosmic Ocean

Pisces is the last sign of the zodiac, the culmination of the soul's journey through all twelve signs. It's the sign of dissolution, of boundaries melting, of returning to the cosmic ocean from which we all emerged.

Pisces governs:

  • Dreams and the subconscious: The realm where symbols speak louder than words

  • Intuition and psychic ability: The knowing that comes from beyond rational thought

  • Compassion and unity: The understanding that all beings are interconnected

  • Creativity and imagination: The artistic muse, the inspired vision

  • Surrender and faith: Letting go of control and trusting the flow

  • The mystical and spiritual: Direct experience of the divine

When the dark moon falls in Pisces, we're invited to swim in these deep waters. To let go of what we think we know and open ourselves to what we can sense, feel, and dream. To receive messages from the depths.

This is prime time for:

  • Scrying and divination

  • Dream work and astral travel

  • Connecting with ancestors or spirit guides

  • Deep meditation and trance work

  • Creative downloads and artistic inspiration

  • Releasing what no longer serves

  • Dissolving boundaries that limit us

A Pisces Dark Moon Ritual: The Well of Dreams

This ritual combines water scrying with dream incubation to help you receive messages from your subconscious and the spiritual realm. You'll be creating a "Well of Dreams,"a sacred space for divination and vision, and then carrying that energy into your sleep for profound dream work.

Timing

Perform this ritual on the evening of March 18, 2026, ideally as close to 9:23 PM EST as possible, though anytime after sunset on March 18 will work. The ritual is designed to be completed before you go to sleep.

What You'll Need:

For the Well of Dreams:

  • A large, dark bowl (black, dark blue, or dark purple if possible)

  • Spring water or moon water (enough to fill the bowl)

  • A white or silver candle

  • Optional: A few drops of lavender, mugwort, or jasmine essential oil

  • Optional: Amethyst, moonstone, or clear quartz crystals

For Dream Incubation:

  • A journal and pen (keep by your bedside)

  • A small sachet or cloth bag

  • Dried mugwort, lavender, and/or chamomile (for dream pillow)

  • Optional: A piece of amethyst to place under your pillow

For the Space:

  • Dim lighting (candlelight is ideal)

  • Quiet, private space where you won't be disturbed

  • Optional: Soft, ambient music or sounds of water

  • Optional: Frankincense, sandalwood, or lotus incense

Preparation:

During the day on March 18:

  1. Fast from screens: If possible, avoid screens (phone, computer, TV) for at least 2-3 hours before the ritual. This helps quiet the rational mind and open the intuitive channels.

  2. Take a ritual bath or shower.: Cleanse yourself physically and energetically. Add sea salt and lavender to the water. As you bathe, imagine washing away the noise of the day, the chatter of the mind, the grip of the ego. You're preparing yourself to descend.

  3. Prepare your dream sachet: Mix your dried herbs (mugwort is especially powerful for dreams, lavender for peace, chamomile for receptivity). Place them in your sachet. Hold it in your hands and speak your intention: "Tonight I will dream true. Tonight I will remember. Tonight I will receive."

  4. Create sacred space: Set up your ritual area with your bowl in the center, candle nearby, and crystals arranged around the bowl if using. This is your well, your portal, your gateway to the depths.

The Ritual:

Part 1: Opening the Well (9:00 PM - 9:30 PM)

Light your candle and dim all other lights. Sit comfortably before your dark bowl.

Take three deep breaths, each one slower and deeper than the last. With each exhale, feel yourself sinking deeper into your body, deeper into the earth, deeper into the darkness.

Invocation:

Speak these words (or similar ones in your own language):

"On this darkest night, when the Moon has gone to ground, I open the Well of Dreams, where truth can be found. Pisces waters, deep and still, show me visions, bend my will. Between the worlds, the veil grows thin, I call the wisdom from within. Ancestors, guides, and sacred deep, Speak to me in silence, speak to me in sleep. This Well I open, this portal I make, For vision, for dreams, for my soul's own sake."

Part 2: Filling the Well

Slowly pour your water into the bowl. As you pour, imagine you're opening a portal, creating a gateway between the physical and spiritual worlds.

If using essential oils, add 3-7 drops to the water. Watch as they spread and swirl. These are the first visions, the first messages.

If using crystals, place them around the outside of the bowl (not in the water). They'll amplify the energy and hold the space.

Gaze at the dark water. Don't stare intensely. Let your vision soften. You're not looking at the water, you're looking into it, through it, to what lies beneath.

Part 3: The Scrying (9:30 PM - 10:00 PM)

Position the candle so its light reflects gently on the water's surface. You should see ripples of light, shadows, movement.

Soften your gaze. Let your eyes go slightly out of focus. Breathe slowly and deeply.

Speak your question or intention. This could be:

  • "What do I need to know right now?"

  • "What is ready to be released from my life?"

  • "What creative work wants to come through me?"

  • "What message do my ancestors/guides have for me?"

  • "Show me the path forward."

Be specific if you can, but don't force it. Sometimes the most profound messages come when we simply ask, "What do I need to see?"

Now, watch. Wait. Be patient.

You might see:

  • Shapes or symbols forming in the water

  • Colors or lights appearing

  • Movement that seems meaningful

  • Images in your mind's eye (this is just as valid as seeing with physical eyes)

  • Feelings or knowing that arise

  • Words or phrases that come to you

Important: Don't dismiss anything as "just imagination." In scrying, imagination IS the language of the divine. Your psyche speaks in symbols, feelings, and fleeting images. Trust what comes.

Scry for 15-20 minutes, or until you feel complete. Some nights the visions come quickly. Other nights you sit in beautiful darkness and that itself is the message (rest, stillness, the void).

Part 4: Recording

When you're ready, break your gaze from the water. Immediately write down everything you saw, felt, sensed, or knew. Don't interpret yet, just record. Especially fragments that don't make sense.

Symbols often reveal their meaning over time. That weird flash of a purple bird? It might make perfect sense in three days when something unexpected happens. Write it all down.

Part 5: Gratitude and Transition

Place your hands on your heart and say:

"I give thanks to the Well of Dreams, To the waters that showed me what I needed to see. I give thanks to Pisces, to the dark moon, to the depths. As I close this Well, I carry its wisdom into sleep. Tonight I will dream, and I will remember. The messages continue. The portal remains open. So it is."

You don't need to dispose of the water immediately. You can leave it on your altar overnight and pour it out in the morning as an offering to the earth. Or you can pour it out now with thanks.

Extinguish the candle (or leave it burning safely if you're staying in the space—never leave candles unattended).

Part 6: Dream Incubation (Before Sleep)

Place your dream sachet under your pillow or inside your pillowcase. If using a crystal, tuck it under the pillow too.

Get into bed with your journal beside you. Before sleep, speak your intention one more time:

"Tonight I dream true. Tonight I remember. Tonight I receive the messages meant for me. May my dreams show me what I need to know."

Close your eyes and review what you saw in the scrying. Hold those images lightly in your mind as you drift off. Don't force it, just let them be present as you slip into sleep.

Dream Work: The Morning After

This is crucial: When you wake up (even in the middle of the night), DO NOT MOVE. Stay in the exact position you're in. Dreams flee quickly when we shift our bodies or start thinking about our day.

With your eyes still closed, recall your dreams. What images? What feelings? What happened?

Only after you've mentally reviewed your dreams should you slowly reach for your journal and write them down. Record everything, even fragments. Even the feeling/tone if you can't remember specific images.

Dreams during a Pisces dark moon are often:

  • Highly symbolic

  • Emotionally intense

  • Featuring water, oceans, swimming, diving

  • Including messages from deceased loved ones or guides

  • Prophetic or precognitive

  • Deeply healing or cathartic

Integration: Working with What You've Received

The dark moon ritual and dream work aren't complete until you integrate what you've learned. Over the next few days:

Day 1-3 (March 19-21): Review your scrying notes and dream journal daily. New meanings often emerge. You might suddenly understand a symbol you couldn't interpret at first.

Day 4-7 (March 22-25): Begin to act on any clear guidance you received. If you were shown a creative project, start it. If you were given a message about a relationship, address it. The universe gave you information, now you must move with it.

Ongoing: Pay attention to synchronicities. Messages from the dark moon often continue to unfold through "coincidences," repeated symbols in daily life, or unexpected encounters.

Additional Practices for the Pisces Dark Moon Window

The dark moon energy is strongest on March 18, but it extends roughly 3 days before and after. During this time (March 15-21), you might also:

Creative Expression:

  • Paint, draw, or create art without a plan—let your hands move intuitively

  • Write poetry or automatic writing

  • Play music or dance without choreography

  • Let the Pisces muse move through you

Water Rituals:

  • Take salt baths with intention

  • Swim in natural water if possible (ocean, lake, river)

  • Cry if tears come—Pisces honors all waters, including grief

  • Create moon water to use in future rituals

Meditation and Trance:

  • Practice deep meditation, especially yoga nidra or guided visualizations

  • Try floating or sensory deprivation if available

  • Practice lucid dreaming techniques

  • Use binaural beats or theta wave music

Shadow Work:

  • Journal on what you're ready to release

  • Examine where you've been avoiding something

  • Look at your escapist tendencies with compassion

  • Explore grief you haven't fully processed

Spiritual Connection:

  • Spend time at your altar

  • Communicate with ancestors or guides

  • Practice tarot or oracle card reading

  • Sit in darkness and simply listen

What to Avoid During the Dark Moon

The dark moon is a time of withdrawal and introspection. It's generally not ideal for:

  • Starting major new projects (wait until after the new moon)

  • Big social events or parties

  • Making major life decisions (the dark moon is for receiving information, not acting)

  • Aggressive or yang activities

  • Forcing anything. This is a time of allowing, not pushing

A Note on Darkness

In our culture, darkness is often feared. We keep lights on, we stay busy, we avoid the void. But the dark moon reminds us that darkness is fertile, necessary, sacred. Seeds germinate in darkness. Babies grow in the dark womb. We restore ourselves in sleep's darkness.

The Pisces dark moon asks: Can you trust the darkness? Can you let yourself dissolve, just for a moment, and see what emerges when you come back together?

This isn't about losing yourself. It's about finding the parts of yourself that only appear when everything else goes quiet.

Closing Words

The well is deep. The waters are dark. But in that darkness, there is wisdom older than words, knowing deeper than thought.

Trust what you see and feel. Trust what comes to you in dreams.

The Pisces dark moon is a gift, a chance to swim in mystery, to touch the infinite, to remember that you are more than your daylight self.

Dive deep, dear one.

The treasures are waiting.

May your visions be clear, your dreams be true, and your journey into the depths bring you safely home.

Blessed dark moon.
