Time: Ideally just before or right when the New Moon occurs (late evening of Nov 20 into Nov 21)
Supplies:
Tarot or oracle deck
Journal & pen
A mirror (hand or small)
A bowl of water + salt (for purification)
A black, dark blue, or deep green candle
Optional: smoky quartz or obsidian (for grounding & transformation)
Optional: incense or smudge (e.g. cedar, mugwort, or copal)
1. Prepare Your Sacred Space (5–7 min)
Dim or extinguish overhead lights; use candles only.
Light your candle and place it near the mirror.
Put the bowl of saltwater and your crystal (if using) nearby.
If you burn incense, do that now to cleanse the space and your aura.
Sit quietly and take 3 deep, slow breaths, allowing yourself to sink into stillness.
2. Mirror Gaze & Invocation (3 min)
Hold (or place) the mirror so you can gaze into your own eyes.
Speak (softly or mentally): "I descend into my depths. I welcome the transformation waiting in darkness. I am ready to shed what no longer serves."
Dip your fingers in the saltwater, then touch your solar plexus (power center), heart (emotional truth), and crown (spiritual knowing).
3. Shadow-Work Tarot Spread — "The Descent & Rebirth"
Shuffle intentionally, asking what needs to die and what wants to be born, and draw 5 cards in a descending vertical line:
Position | Meaning |
1. What Must Be Released | The outdated belief, habit, or identity that you've outgrown and need to let go. |
2. The Fear Holding It In Place | What keeps you clinging to this old self or pattern. |
3. The Void / The Unknown | What the empty space will feel like once you release — the uncertainty you must trust. |
4. The Gift in the Darkness | The power, wisdom, or strength that emerges through this transformation. |
5. Who You're Becoming | The renewed self waiting to emerge from this dark moon cycle. |
Take your time with each card. Breathe with the images, feel the discomfort, notice what wants to crack open.
4. Deep Journal Prompts (10–15 min)
Reflect in writing, ideally immediately after your tarot insights:
What version of myself am I holding onto out of fear, even though I know it's time to let go?
What transformation have I been resisting because the "in-between" feels too vulnerable or unknown?
What new beginning is trying to emerge through me, and what one brave step can I take to honor it?
Let the cards' messages inform your writing. Write without judgment: let the truth pour out.
5. Release & Seal (5 min)
Gaze into the mirror again, naming what you're releasing with gratitude, e.g. "I release you, [pattern/identity]. You served me once. Now I transform."
Dip fingers in saltwater, touch your heart, then press your palms to the earth (or floor) while visualizing roots carrying away what no longer serves you.
Extinguish the candle (snuff, don't blow) as a seal of the ritual and as a symbolic "completion of the descent."
