Time needed: ~45–60 min

Supplies

  • Picture frame with glass/plastic pane (not yet painted black — to be crafted at the start)

  • Black matte paint (spray or acrylic)

  • A candle (black, white, or red)

  • A small bowl of saltwater (for cleansing & grounding)

  • Journal & pen

  • Herbs for cleansing/vision (mugwort, rosemary, sage, or lavender)

  • Optional crystals — obsidian, bloodstone, or moonstone

  • Black cloth (to wrap the mirror when not in use)

1. Prepare Your Space (5 min)

  • Arrange the supplies in the center or on a working table.

  • Light your candle.

  • Place your saltwater nearby.

  • Burn your herbs as incense or set them around the circle.

  • Take three deep breaths, exhaling anything heavy or distracting.

2. Cast the Circle & Call the Quarters (5–7 min)

Walk the circle clockwise, raising your hand or tool, and say:

  • East (Air): “Spirits of Air, breath of insight and clarity, be with us as we face the shadows and seek truth.”

  • South (Fire): “Spirits of Fire, flame of courage and transformation, be with us as we illuminate what has been hidden.”

  • West (Water): “Spirits of Water, depth of feeling and intuition, be with us as we gaze into reflection and mystery.”

  • North (Earth): “Spirits of Earth, strength and grounding, be with us as we integrate shadow into wholeness.”

Stand at the center and say: “The circle is cast, the eclipse is upon us, we walk between shadow and light.”

3. Create the Black Mirror (10–15 min)

  1. Remove the glass/plastic pane from the frame.

  2. Cleanse it with saltwater, saying: “I wash away all past reflections, leaving this surface clear and ready for shadow truth.”

  3. Paint one side with matte black paint.

  4. Once dry (a hairdryer or pre-painted prep can help in a group), reassemble the frame with the painted side inward, so the smooth side faces out.

  5. Hold the mirror to the candle flame and incense smoke, saying: “Mirror of shadows, vessel of truth, show me what is hidden, guide me toward wisdom.”

  6. Place the mirror before you, ready for scrying.

4. Center & Connect (3 min)

  • Dip your fingertips into the saltwater.

  • Touch your forehead (clear sight), your heart (truth), and your palms (action).

  • Say aloud:

“As the Moon is shadowed, I face my own shadows. I open to hidden truths. I align with wisdom and wholeness.”

5. Mirror Scrying – “Reveal & Integrate” (10–15 min)

  • Gaze softly into the mirror’s black surface, letting your eyes relax.

  • Ask inwardly or aloud:

    • What shadow within me needs to be faced tonight?

    • What truth do I resist but must embrace?

    • What hidden wisdom is ready to emerge?

  • Observe without judgment.

  • When you feel ready, journal what arose — images, feelings, words.

6. Journal Integration (10–15 min)

Use these prompts to deepen the experience:

  • What shadow aspect or hidden truth revealed itself tonight?

  • How does this shadow influence my choices or relationships?

  • What would it look like to bring this part of myself into the light with compassion and balance?

7. Close & Seal (5–7 min)

  • Thank the mirror, the Moon, and any guides or spirits.

  • Dip your fingers in the saltwater and flick a few drops away from you, releasing what was uncovered.

  • Say: “I have seen what was hidden. I carry this wisdom into the light. So it is.”

  • Snuff the candle.

  • Wrap the mirror in black cloth until its next use.

Release the quarters:

  • North (Earth): “Thank you, grounding and steadying Earth. Go if you must, stay if you will.”

  • West (Water): “Thank you, flowing and intuitive Water. Go if you must, stay if you will.”

  • South (Fire): “Thank you, transformative and passionate Fire. Go if you must, stay if you will.”

  • East (Air): “Thank you, wise and clarifying Air. Go if you must, stay if you will.”

Finally, walk the circle counter-clockwise, saying: “The circle is open, yet never broken. The work is done. The shadows are honored. Blessed be.”
