Date: January 31st (Evening) – February 1st (Morning)

Theme: Healing, Protection, Renewal

Energy: Imbolc + Brigid’s Night, blessing, rebirth, sacred fire, holy well

Ritual Concept

The Brat Bhríde (“Brigid’s Mantle”) is an ancient Irish tradition honoring the goddess Brigid on the eve of Imbolc. Participants place a cloth, a mantle, outside overnight so that Brigid may bless it as She passes. These mantles are then kept all year for healing, protection, veiling, fertility work, easing headaches, soothing fevers, supporting childbirth, and strengthening personal magic.

In this ritual, we prepare, decorate, and bless our mantles before placing them outside overnight to receive Brigid’s healing touch.

Preparation

Altar Setup

Design this altar with symbols of Brigid, flame, well, forge, and healing.

  • Altar cloth: White, red, or gold

  • Centerpiece: Brigid’s cross, a candle flame, a bowl of sacred water

  • Moon Candle: White or gold taper

  • Elemental Tools:

    • Air: Feather, incense, or bell

    • Fire: Candle, hearth symbol, spark

    • Water: Bowl of blessed or “Brigid’s well” water

    • Earth: Fresh flowers, oatcakes, or a stone

  • Offerings: Milk, honey, oatcakes, bread, flowers

  • Mantle Placement Symbol: Branch, doorway, or bowl representing where the cloths will rest overnight

Ritual Materials

  • One mantle cloth (red or white: handkerchief, ribbon, scarf, fabric square)

  • Decoration tools:

    • Embroidery thread

    • Fabric markers or paint pens

    • Stickers or symbols

    • Charms (sun, fire, well, cross)

  • Magical liquids for blessing:

    • Rose water

    • Chamomile or lavender water

    • Moon water

    • Herbal tea blends

  • Optional: Needles for embroidery, additional ribbons, bells

Ritual

1. Opening & Setting Sacred Space

Tonight, on Brigid’s Eve, we gather in honor of the goddess who walks the land from darkness into light. Brigid, keeper of the flame, healer of wounds, guardian of wells, and midwife of rebirth. As She travels across the world this night, we prepare our mantles so that Her blessings may rest upon them and upon us.

Light the center candle.

Cleansing the Space with Breath and Intention: Take a deep breath in, hold, and exhale slowly. Ring a bell or use incense. Say

“With breath and intention, we open this circle. This is sacred space. We are sacred beings.”

2. Calling the Quarters with Brigid Imagery

  • East (Air): “Winds of the East, breath of inspiration, enter this space with clarity and song. As Brigid inspires the poet, inspire us tonight.”

  • South (Fire): “Flames of the South, hearth of Brigid, ignite our courage and warm our hands. Bless these mantles with protection and strength.”

  • West (Water): “Waters of the West, sacred wells of the goddess, flow through us with healing and renewal. Let Brigid’s blessing deepen like a holy spring.”

  • North (Earth): “Roots of the North, fertile soil of rebirth, hold us steady as the light returns. Let our mantles carry Brigid’s grounding and grace.”

  • Center Invocation: “Brigid of the Flame and Well, Brigid the Healer, Brigid the Smith, Brigid the Poet, walk with us tonight. Bless these mantles as You pass, and bless the hearts that carry them.”

3. Preparing the Mantles

A. Reflection

Invite participants to hold their cloth and reflect:

  • What healing am I seeking this year?

  • What protection do I hope Brigid will weave into my life?

  • Where do I need renewal?

Allow a moment of quiet.

B. Decorating the Mantle

Decorate your mantles however intuition guides:

  • Embroider small symbols

  • Draw with fabric markers

  • Add charms

  • Tie knots representing intentions

  • Stitch or mark a word of healing

Each mark is an invocation. Each decoration is a prayer. Each thread carries a blessing.

C. Anointing the Mantle

Lightly sprinkle or anoint their mantle with magical waters:

  • Rose for love

  • Chamomile for calm

  • Lavender for healing

  • Moon water for blessing

  • Herbal tea for protection

“As the water touches this cloth, may Brigid’s blessing prepare to rest upon it.”

4. Setting the Mantles Out for Blessing

The mantles must remain outside overnight (Jan 31st–Feb 1st).

As Brigid walks the land tonight, may She see these mantles waiting. May She bless them as She blesses the world, with healing, with flame, with renewal.

5. Closing the Circle

  • North (Earth): “Thank you, Earth, for grounding Brigid’s blessings.”

  • West (Water): “Thank you, Water, for carrying Her healing.”

  • South (Fire): “Thank you, Fire, for Her eternal flame.”

  • East (Air): “Thank you, Air, for Her inspiration and song.”

  • Center: “Brigid, we thank You for Your presence. Bless these mantles as You pass this night. The circle is open. The blessing continues.”

Blow out the center candle.
