Theme: ⚖️ Acknowledging both burden and blessing
Energy: Balanced, grateful, reflective, communal, abundant. We honor both what weighs us down and what lifts us up, trusting that together we can carry it all.
🪬 Setup
A symbolic set of scales.
Two baskets with slips of paper:
“What Weighs Me Down” (grief, fear, obligations).
“What Lifts Me Up” (joy, growth, gratitude, support).
Pens or markers.
Drums, rattles, or soft humming for atmosphere.
A central bowl or jar to hold the community blessings.
1. Opening & Grounding
“Welcome, friends, to the turning of the wheel. Tonight we gather to honor Mabon, the time of balance between light and dark, day and night, summer’s fullness and winter’s rest. The scales remind us that all things are held in balance, our grief and our joy, our heaviness and our hope.
As the Earth tips toward the darker half of the year, we pause to weigh our own lives, to see the burdens we carry and the blessings that nourish us. Together, we will honor both, knowing that each has its place in the balance.”
(pause for 3–4 breaths)
Calling the Quarters:
East / Air: “I call to the East, to the winds that turn the leaves and carry the scent of autumn. Spirits of Air, bring us clarity, vision, and the breath of balance. Be with us now, in this circle of harvest.”
South / Fire: “I call to the South, to the flame of hearth and the blaze of setting sun. Spirits of Fire, bring us passion, courage, and the spark of transformation. Be with us now, in this circle of balance.”
West / Water: “I call to the West, to the flowing rivers and the rains that nourish the fields. Spirits of Water, bring us compassion, intuition, and the wisdom of release. Be with us now, in this circle of truth.”
North / Earth: “I call to the North, to the soil that holds the seeds and the harvest we now gather. Spirits of Earth, bring us strength, grounding, and the gifts of abundance. Be with us now, in this circle of gratitude.”
Center / Spirit (optional): “I call to Spirit, the weaver of all directions, the balance of shadow and light, the heartbeat of the turning wheel. Spirit, be with us now, as we stand in harmony at Mabon.”
2. Introducing the Work
“Before us are two baskets, one for the things that weigh heavy on our hearts, and one for the blessings that give us strength. Tonight, we will place both sides of our lives upon the scales, acknowledging that we hold both at once.”
3. Writing the Weights & Blessings
“I invite you to come forward and take two slips, one from each basket.
On the first slip, write down something that burdens you, something you are ready to acknowledge tonight.
On the second slip, write a blessing: a joy, a strength, or a source of support that lifts you.
Take a few quiet moments now to write. Let your heart speak simply and honestly.”
(allow a few minutes of silence, soft drumming or humming may begin once people finish writing)
4. Balancing the Scales
“When you are ready, bring your slips to the scales. Place your burden on one side… and your blessing on the other.
As each person places their words upon the scales, let us hum, drum, or chant softly, weaving a rhythm of balance and unity.”
(continue until all have placed their slips; allow a moment of silence to observe the scales as they rest)
5. Witnessing the Balance
“Look now upon the scales. See how our burdens and blessings rest together. Whether the scales lean or balance evenly, they tell us this truth: that both sides of life shape us, teach us, and carry us forward.”
“Though our burdens have weight, our blessings always have the power to grow greater. To honor this harvest season, we tip the scales toward abundance.”
(Place your chosen offering(s) onto the blessing side of the scales, so it visibly outweighs the burdens.)
“May we remember that gratitude, joy, and community can always outweigh sorrow. The scales tip toward light as the wheel turns.”
6. Closing Blessing
“Tonight, we have placed both our burdens and our blessings upon the scales. The burdens we will release, but the blessings, those we hold as seeds of growth.
Before we close, we will share these blessings with one another. The slips of paper with blessings have been gathered into this bowl (or jar). Each of you will take one, not your own, but another’s.
This blessing is not just a word. It is a gift entrusted to you. Over the coming days and weeks, I invite you to carry it with you, to nurture it, and to weave it into your life. In doing so, you are not only strengthening yourself—you are helping the one who wrote it, for we are all connected.”
(Pass the bowl around the circle. Remind participants not to take their own blessing.)
As each person receives a slip: “Hold the blessing to your heart for a moment. Imagine it glowing brighter as you breathe it in. Know that someone in this circle has offered this, and your care will help it grow.”
“Now we leave not only with our own lessons, but with the blessings of the community. May each seed we carry find soil in our lives, and may we water these blessings for one another.
Together:
"In balance we stand, in truth we grow,
Let burden be lifted and blessings flow.
So may it be.”
7. Closing the Circle
East / Air: “Spirits of Air, winds that stir the autumn leaves, we thank you for your clarity, vision, and breath of balance. Go if you must, stay if you will, and know our gratitude. Hail and farewell.”
South / Fire: “Spirits of Fire, flame of hearth and blaze of sun, we thank you for your passion, courage, and spark of transformation. Go if you must, stay if you will, and know our gratitude. Hail and farewell.”
West / Water: “Spirits of Water, flowing rivers and nourishing rains, we thank you for your compassion, intuition, and wisdom of release. Go if you must, stay if you will, and know our gratitude. Hail and farewell.”
North / Earth: “Spirits of Earth, fertile soil and gathered harvest, we thank you for your strength, grounding, and gifts of abundance. Go if you must, stay if you will, and know our gratitude. Hail and farewell.”
Center / Spirit (optional):
“Spirit, weaver of all directions, heartbeat of the turning wheel, we thank you for your harmony, presence, and guiding light. Go if you must, stay if you will, and know our gratitude. Hail and farewell.”
