Ritual Structure

1. Gathering & Purification (10 minutes)

Introduction:

“Welcome, friends, on this sacred night of Samhain, when the veil between worlds is thin. Tonight, we honor the ancestors, those who came before us and shaped the paths we now walk. But know this: ancestors are not only those of blood and family. They are also the Mighty Dead, the witches and wise ones who carried the flame of magic through the ages. They are teachers, mentors, chosen kin, and kindred spirits who left their mark upon our lives. Some we may know by name, others whisper only in the quiet of our bones.

As we gather, we remember that we walk in a great weaving of lineage, threads of blood, spirit, craft, and love. We honor them all tonight, with gratitude and reverence. In this circle, no one stands alone; we are the living branch of an ancient tree, rooted in memory, reaching toward the future.”

  • Form a circle around the altar.

  • Light the central candle as the “flame between worlds.”

  • Pass incense, smoke, or anointing oil clockwise for cleansing.

  • Each person states their intention: “I come to honor the ancestors, seek wisdom, and walk between shadows and seeds.”

  • Leader: “On this night when the veil is thin, we gather in reverence, listening for the voices of those who came before and seeking guidance for the path ahead.”

2. Cast the Sacred Circle (8 minutes)

Leader (holding tarot suit card for each element):

  • East / Air (Swords): “Ancient winds that carried the last breath of our ancestors, guide our sight.”

  • South / Fire (Wands): “Sacred flame of memory and passion, ignite our hearts as we honor those at rest.”

  • West / Water (Cups): “Flowing waters of grief and joy, connect us with bonds that transcend death.”

  • North / Earth (Pentacles): “Sacred ground of abundance and strength, root us in remembrance.”

  • Center / Spirit: “Spirits of the Ancestors, beloved dead, those of blood, bone, heart, and spirit— On this night when the veil grows thin, we welcome you. Walk beside us, guide us with your wisdom, Bless us with your presence, That we may honor you and carry your legacy forward. Ancestors, be with us now.”

All together: “The circle is cast. We are protected, we are connected, we are blessed.”

3. Ancestral Invocation (5 minutes)

  • Place offerings and ancestor mementos/photos on the altar.

  • Leader rings bell or chime three times.

  • All speak together:

"Ancestors of blood and bone, Ancestors of spirit and chosen family, Those who came before and lit the way, We call to you across the veil. Join us in this sacred space, Share your wisdom, share your love. We remember you, we honor you, We carry your legacy forward."

4. Tarot Work – "Messages from Beyond" (20 minutes)

Group Reading (5 min):

  • Place 3 cards in center:

    1. Message from the ancestors

    2. Lesson from the past year

    3. Guidance for the year ahead

  • Discuss impressions as a group.

Personal Shadow & Seed Spread (15 min):

  • Each participant draws two cards:

    • Shadow: What must be released or faced in the dark?

    • Seed: What will I nurture through the coming year?

  • Quiet journaling & reflection.

  • Optional: Whisper shadow into the bowl of water or write it down & dissolve/burn. Hold the Seed card to your heart.

5. Spirit Circle & Sharing (15 minutes)

  • Reform the circle around the altar.

  • Each person shares one insight, image, or message from their reading.

  • After each sharing, the group responds: “We hear you, we honor this message.”

  • Leader: “The ancestors and the cards speak through us, around us, and within us. Their wisdom lives on.”

6. Gratitude & Integration (10 minutes)

  • Participants journal:

    • One thing they are grateful for from an ancestor.

    • One way they will honor that wisdom in the coming year.

  • Place writings beneath stones/crystals on altar.

  • Group blessing together:

"Thank you, beloved ancestors, for your presence tonight. Thank you for the love that transcends death. Thank you for the wisdom that guides our steps. May we live in ways that honor your memory. May we be ancestors future generations will be proud to claim."

7. Closing the Circle (7 minutes)

  • Each takes back their stone/crystal as a connection token.

  • Release the quarters in reverse order, holding tarot suit cards:

    • North / Pentacles: “Thank you, Earth, for holding the roots of memory.”

    • West / Cups: “Thank you, Waters, for carrying tears and joy between worlds.”

    • South / Wands: “Thank you, Fire, for keeping memory alive in our hearts.”

    • East / Swords: “Thank you, Air, for carrying our words to those beyond.”

    • Center/ Spirit:“Beloved ancestors, spirits of those who came before, We thank you for walking with us tonight. Stay if you will, go if you must. Your wisdom is heard, your love remembered. The veil closes, but our hearts remain open. We honor you always. Go in peace.”

  • Extinguish central candle: “The circle is open but unbroken. The love continues. The ancestors live on. Blessed Samhain to all.”
